Shave/Wax 24 - 48 hours before your appointment. This allows time for any open hair follicles/pores to close before your spray. Avoid using a razor with a moisture strip. We also suggest exfoliating after you shave to get rid of any residue from your shaving cream.
Exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment. Focus on dry areas such as hands, elbows, knees and ankles. If you have remnants of an old spray tan on your skin, try to completely remove it when exfoliating.
We recommend using an exfoliating mitt or washcloth, and advise against using oil-based body scrubs because they will will leave a residue.
The 24 hours leading up to your tan you should avoid using bar soaps, cream-based body washes, oil-based products, and in-shower moisturizers. These products are known to leave a residue on the skin and can create a barrier that the tan cannot penetrate. You should also avoid any chemical exfoliants like retinol, glycolic acid, etc. as they can be drying.
We recommend using gel-based body washes, and advise against using body washes that are cream-based (Dove specifically).
A spray tan should be your last beauty service leading up to an event. Complete all services (i.e., manicures/pedicures, lash extensions, facials, etc.) at least 24 hours before your appointment
If mani/pedi is completed the day of tan, forego any oils/lotions that your nail technician might apply. If completed days after your tan, be aware that your tan may become uneven due to soaking, acetone, oils, lotions, etc.
Shower at least 4 hours before your appointment to allow your pH levels to neutralize. Be sure to rinse your body well to wash off any residual product residue from things like body wash, hair conditioner, and shaving cream.
If you must shower within 4 hours, run cold water at the end of the shower.
You want to avoid wearing anything tight that could rub off your spray tan while it is developing. Avoid wearing things like leggings, sports bras, boots, socks/tights, hats, apple watches, etc. We suggest wearing loose pajama style pants, and an oversized zippered sweatshirt. If possible wear flip flops or loose slippers.
Before your first rinse, the bronzer in solution may transfer to your clothes so it is best to wear something you don't mind the possibility of getting stained.
The day of your spray tan do not use any body lotions, moisturizers, oils, deodorants, makeup, or perfumes. These products can create a barrier on the skin that the tan will not adhere to.
If you end up needing to use any of these products the day of your tan, rinse them off during your shower at least 4 hours before your appointment.
Avoid getting wet or sweating before the recommended rinse time - this includes things like working out, washing your hands, doing the dishes, even being licked by your pet.
If you do accidentally get wet you can take a fluffy makeup brush and use circular motions to buff and blend the solution. If you have self-tanner at home, you can use a very small amount on your makeup brush to help blend. The bronzer may not appear "perfect" after, but once rinsed off the tan will be evened out.
Before your first rinse, avoid sitting on leathers, light colored materials and soft furnishing as bronzer in the solution could transfer to these surfaces. We suggested covering fabrics before sitting on them to avoid this possibility.
Protect your tan while you sleep by wearing a loose long sleeve top and pants to bed. This will prevent color transfer from touching your tan in your sleep and creasing from skin-to-skin friction.
If you do not want to sleep in your tan we recommend our Express Bronze Tan so you can shower in 1 - 3 hours!
Do not rinse until your recommended rinse time. Rinse in lukewarm, not hot water. While rinsing you want to gently, but thoroughly “wipe” the bronzer color off of your skin using your HANDS ONLY. Do not wash your hair, shave or use any soaps! When you get out of the shower pat your skin dry, do not rub.
You will see color coming off during this first rinse... don't panic, this is normal! That color is just the bronzer. Your actual tan will take up to 24 hours to fully develop. Trust the process!
Regardless of solution type (express, standard), all tans take up to 24 hours to fully develop. Any product applied to the skin during this time can hinder the results so we suggest you wait 24 hours to use any soaps or lotions. This includes shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. Deodorant is okay to use after your first rinse.
Once the tan is developed, we suggest moisturizing 2x per day day to prolong your tan. It is best to moisturize with a lotion that does not contain mineral oils, or harsh alcohols/fragrances as these can strip a tan very quickly.
Foremost, you want to make sure you are avoiding any products that contain mineral oil - mineral oil is actually used as a method to remove tans. We recommend using gel-based body washes, and advise against using body washes that are cream-based (Dove specifically).
Retinols, AHA, BHA and any other acne/skin care products will strip the tan off your face and body. We recommend avoiding these products until your spray tan fades!
If you apply anything to the skin that contains an adhesive (i.e., band-aids, sticky boobs, fashion tape etc.) you run the risk of pulling off the tan when removing. This also includes applying sticky boobs or boob tape a week in advance of your tan!
We recommend waiting 48 hours after your spray tan before going into a pool, hot tub or the ocean as it will dry out your skin. Your tan will likely fade faster due to dry skin. If you do not wait 48 hours, we recommend rinsing off the chlorine/salt water and applying a moisturizer in order to minimize fading.
For best results, we recommend sticking with low impact workouts that do not cause excessive sweating to avoid fading specifically from sports bra straps, tight sock/shoes, apple watch etc.
